Description

This spooky Halloween cake is a delicious treat perfect for any Halloween celebration!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons black gel food coloring
  • 1 cup whipped cream or cream cheese frosting (for topping)
  • Edible decorations (spooky sprinkles, black and orange candies)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, sift together the flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, vanilla extract, and black gel food coloring until well combined.
  4. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring until the mixture is smooth and well blended.
  5. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
  6. Place the cake pans in the preheated oven and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Allow the cakes to cool in their pans for 15-20 minutes. Once cooled, remove from pans and transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  8. Once the cake layers are cool, spread frosting on top of one layer. Place the second layer on top and frost the entire cake.
  9. Use your chosen decorations (sprinkles, candies) to create a spooky Halloween look.
  10. If possible, refrigerate the cake for about 20 minutes to set the frosting before serving.
