Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
- ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 cup buttermilk
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- 3 large eggs
- 1 tablespoon baking soda
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoons black gel food coloring
- 1 cup whipped cream or cream cheese frosting (for topping)
- Edible decorations (spooky sprinkles, black and orange candies)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large bowl, sift together the flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In another bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, vanilla extract, and black gel food coloring until well combined.
- Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring until the mixture is smooth and well blended.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
- Place the cake pans in the preheated oven and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Allow the cakes to cool in their pans for 15-20 minutes. Once cooled, remove from pans and transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
- Once the cake layers are cool, spread frosting on top of one layer. Place the second layer on top and frost the entire cake.
- Use your chosen decorations (sprinkles, candies) to create a spooky Halloween look.
- If possible, refrigerate the cake for about 20 minutes to set the frosting before serving.
