Cooking Tips and Notes for Lemon Cream Cheese Dump Cake

Creating a delightful lemon cream cheese dump cake is a journey filled with simplicity and flavor. Here are some cooking tips to elevate your baking game and ensure this cake becomes a crowd favorite.

Use Quality Ingredients

  • Lemon Juice and Zest: Freshly squeezed lemon juice and zest will add a bright, vibrant flavor that bottled versions simply can’t match. Don’t skimp on the zest; it enhances the aroma and taste immensely.

  • Cream Cheese: Opt for full-fat cream cheese for the best texture. It will melt beautifully, providing that luscious creaminess that complements the tart lemon perfectly.

Layering the Ingredients

When making your lemon cream cheese dump cake, distribute the ingredients evenly. Start by spreading the cream cheese mixture evenly on the bottom of the pan, topped by the dry cake mix and then, gently pouring the butter over. This ensures every bite has that signature rich flavor.

Baking Notes

  • Oven Temperature: Make sure to preheat your oven thoroughly. It helps the cake rise correctly and avoid a dense texture.
  • Baking Time: Check for doneness a few minutes before the recommended time, as ovens can vary. A toothpick inserted in the center should come out clean.

Description

A delicious lemon cream cheese dessert that is easy to prepare and perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 (21-ounce) cans of lemon pie filling
  • 15 ounces yellow cake mix (divided)
  • 12 ounces whipped cream cheese spread
  • 1/2 cup salted butter (sliced into 40 pieces)
  • whipped topping or ice cream (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking pan with nonstick cooking spray.
  2. Pour the 2 (21-ounce) cans of lemon pie filling into the prepared pan and spread it evenly to the edges of the pan.
  3. Evenly sprinkle ½ cup of the cake mix over the lemon filling.
  4. Pipe or dollop the 12 ounces whipped cream cheese spread all over the cake mix layer, spreading it out as much as possible. Even out the top of the cream cheese layer by pressing it down slightly while spreading it with an angled spatula.
  5. Sprinkle the remaining cake mix on top making sure to cover the cream cheese completely and as evenly as possible.
  6. Place the 1/2 cup salted butter in thin pats all over the top of the cake mix. I did 8 rows of 5 pats of butter.
  7. Place in the preheated oven and bake for 35-45 minutes until golden brown on top and the filling is bubbling on the sides. I recommend checking the cake part way through baking and spreading the melted butter slightly to avoid dry patches.
  8. Remove from the oven and cool for 15-20 minutes before serving warm. It’s delicious served cold as well. Top with whipped topping or ice cream.
